You do not need a rack of machines to build a body. You need load, a way to hold it, something to pull from, and a bench that does not fold under a heavy set. We built a complete garage gym for under a thousand dollars and ran a twelve-week block on it to prove it.
The build
- Adjustable dumbbells, 5–52 lb pair — $349. The single highest-value purchase in home fitness.
- Flat-to-incline bench rated to 600 lb — $189. Do not cheap out here.
- Pull-up bar with multi-grip — $79. Installed in a doorway or bolted to joists.
- Resistance band set with door anchor — $59. Covers face pulls, pull-aparts, lat work.
- Kettlebell, 24 kg — $89. Swings, carries, single-leg work.
- Suspension trainer — $129. Rows, fallouts, assisted pistol squats.
Total: $894 before tax, leaving roughly $100 for a mat and a foam roller. Over twelve weeks our tester added 3.2 kg of lean mass and 22 kg to his estimated squat — with no barbell in sight.
